On the first full moon of Dakshināyana, the time when the sun travels to the south direction, we celebrate Guru Pūrnima, an occasion to show gratitude and pay reverence to the Gurus who offer us guidance and give us the gift of knowledge. Who dispel darkness and provide clarity.
I feel so lucky to be part of a culture that celebrates our gurus. India is a civilisation that has deeply examined this relationship between the guru and the disciple. Guru in Sanskrit means heavy. Guru is a heavyweight, stable character – weighty with knowledge, wisdom and experience. The shishya is laghu – light and not yet in touch with the deepest portions of their reality.
Today on Guru Pūrnimā – the full moon of the month of Āṣāḍha, I would like to acknowledge our wise ṛṣis who used the energy of their great tapas to go deep inward to connect with and accept the revelations of this cosmos. They offered this deep wisdom for the benefit of all humanity. I thank their expansive generosity and acknowledge them from the bottom of my heart.
The countless yogis, munis, gurus who reflected upon the meaning of life and the reason for existence and continue to guide all of us in ways that we may not even be aware of, I thank them.
And finally our inner guru – a light that is always present, should we make an effort to feel its presence and connect with it – I acknowledge and thank that light. May its presence be felt stronger and stronger.
It is during this auspicious time that I am so happy to open up the Ocean of Wonder, with the blessings of my ethereal gurus.
