Moon Bathing is the simple yet powerful practice of exposing oneself to the soothing light of the Moon. In Ayurveda, the Moon (Chandra) is associated with cooling, healing, and stabilising energies. The gentle radiance of the Moon is believed to profoundly impact the mind, body, and spirit, offering rejuvenation.
According to ancient wisdom, the body and mind are deeply attuned to the rhythms of nature, including the cycles of the Moon. The cooling lunar energy is said to nourish Ojas, the vital essence responsible for immunity, vitality, and emotional balance. Unlike the heat of the Sun, which stimulates Agni (digestive fire), the Moon’s light is like soma, or nectar—cooling and restorative. It is especially beneficial for those experiencing excess stress, anxiety, inflammation, or hormonal imbalances.
The Practice
Moon Bathing is a simple yet deeply healing ritual. It requires no elaborate setup—just an openness to receive its benefits. There is no right or wrong way to practise Moon Bathing; simply step outside, bask in the Moon’s glow, and relax.
To make the most of this experience, the best time to bask in the Moon’s rays is from moonrise onward, as the outside world begins to settle and the Moon’s presence feels more serene. The full potency of the Moon is at midnight, so on particularly special nights—like the Full Moon—you may choose to Moon Bathe at midnight, when its energy is at its peak.
Wearing light, breathable cotton in soft, neutral tones is recommended, allowing the body to absorb the cooling lunar energy effortlessly. If you have a garden at home or in your neighbourhood, you might also enjoy a barefoot walk on the grass while gazing at the Moon—grounding your energy and calming an overactive mind.
Moon Phases & Bathing
“It is best to bathe in the waxing moon (from new moon to full moon) as this is considered most auspicious”.
If you begin your ritual during the New Moon, when the Moon is not visible in the sky, you can still use this time for relaxation. The New Moon marks a period of renewal and introspection—an opportunity to release what no longer serves you, making space for fresh intentions. This phase is ideal for inner reflection, setting new goals, and embracing stillness.
The Waxing Moon is a time of growth and revitalisation. As the Moon expands, so does its energy, encouraging creativity, healing, and new beginnings. It is an auspicious period for nurturing ideas, strengthening intentions, and inviting positive change.
During the Full Moon, its energy is at its peak—luminous and potent. Bathing in its glow can promote emotional harmony, enhance sleep, and replenish the body’s cooling, restorative energies.
As the Moon wanes, the focus shifts to letting go—whether of emotional burdens, old habits, or lingering negativity. This phase supports deep cleansing and emotional release, making it particularly beneficial for those feeling overwhelmed or heavy-hearted.
Moon Bathing & Ayurveda
The cooling energy of the Moon helps balance excess heat in the body, soothing skin inflammation and irritability. Its gentle presence calms an overactive mind, promoting stress relief, easing anxiety, and encouraging restful sleep. In Ayurveda, the Moon is closely linked to reproductive health, with regular exposure to its light believed to support hormonal balance and enhance fertility. Emotionally, the Full Moon is known to heighten positive feelings, but embracing its glow with mindful awareness can foster inner clarity and equilibrium. Moon Bathing also nourishes Ojas—the vital essence responsible for immunity, strength, and overall well-being—offering deep restoration for both body and mind.
Moon Bathing is a traditional practice of slowing down and aligning with nature’s rhythms. It requires no rigid rules—only an openness to receive the healing grace of the Moon. Whether done alone in quiet contemplation or as part of a mindful ritual, this practice invites balance, tranquillity, and renewal into everyday life.
In the Moon’s light, there is a quiet softness, a stillness, and an unspoken invitation—to surrender, to heal, and to simply be.
This is quite helpful, especially considering I have thyroid. Will definitely try tomorrow onwards. 🙂
